He was one of the early pioneers of rocket powered planes to the edge of space, along with Joe Engle, Scott Crossfield and Neil Armstrong.

Some of the X-15 team, from left to right:  Joe Engle, Bob Rushworth, John McKay, Pete Knight, Milt Thompson, and Bill Dana. Other members of the crew were Neil Armstrong (mentioned earlier)  Michael Adams, Scott Crossfield, Forrest Petersen, Joseph Walker and Robert White. Adams was killed in an X-15 crash. Neil Armstrong and Joe Engle were the only members of the group to be involved in the space program after Mercury, with Engle going on to fly on the Space Shuttle.

Engle is the only member of the group still living.

If you're not a scientist but you think you've destroyed the foundation of a vast scientific edifice with 10 minutes of Googling, you might want to consider the possibility that you're wrong.
