NASA is now shamefully lying for Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens credited President Donald Trump for securing the return of two astronauts stranded for more than nine months on the International Space Station.
"This is a huge win for the Trump administration. And it would not have happened without President Trump's intervention." Stevens said.
To be clear, the decision to make Butch and Suni a part of Crew 9 and return them in February or March of 2025 was made last year, before Trump was re-elected, because it was the most practical option. There was no political advantage for Joe Biden or Kamala Harris to delay their return... it would have been far more advantageous for them to move heaven and Earth to return them sooner.
Making Butch and Suni part of Crew 9 was a smart, efficient, and fiscally responsible decision... something that you would think Elon Musk, head of DOGE, would appreciate.
The whole idea that the astronauts were trapped at the ISS for political reasons is utter nonsense. It is just an example of how people fluff Trump's ego, and it is a really damaging move by NASA who has already had to defend their credibility for decades over stupid conspiracy theories.

Bethany Stevens took over as NASA press secretary on 10 March 2025. She was formerly the press secretary for Sen. Ted Cruz.

Ol' Lying Ted. That explains a lot.

It is both fascinating and horrifying to watch the deconstruction of the US Government. We now have a normally non-partisan department deliberately lying for the President... and lies that can easily be proven wrong. Yet you tell a lie often enough, the people still lap it up, Trump continues his lies, and the US marches on to be the Fourth Reich.

He was born in Canada, wasn't he? Maybe the Canadian government should offer him the position of Governor-General when it becomes vacant? ;)

We disavow that man. Lol

Looks like NASA is now just become more of a money pit for SpaceX.
Despite multiple failures and not one actual orbital success Starship is added to their launch service offerings?

You know this, and I know you know this, because anyone with an IQ north of a turnip's knows this, but government isn't supposed to be efficient, it's supposed to be accountable, and DOGE is doing it's damndest to destroy any and all accountability for this administration.
They are going to break things so badly that it cannot be fixed. We're looking at a couple of decades in the wilderness of strongmen and juntas, and when we come out the other side any new Constitution had better include some mandatory trigger clauses, along with a re-think of checks and balances. We can't rely on the honor system, and we can't rely on the American people electing someone with a sense of shame (Mencken may have been an elitist asshole, but he wasn't wrong).
Oh well, I guess 250 years was a good run.

Sort-of related, there's a new video from Ellie In Space which goes into detail about just how bad things were on the Starliner as they approached the ISS, certainly far worse than I understood at the time.

I saw that - very good. I was able to understand!
