It looks to be as tough to get a straight story out of Iran as it used to be trying to pry information from the Soviet Union.  I suspect the penalties for letting the state down are about the same.

And to be perfectly honest, the comparison between Iran and the Soviet Union is the reason that, when I first heard the story, I looked for independent verification.  I didn't dispute a successful launch; those are hard to fake, and I said so.  However, I knew it was possible that the events did not happen the way the Iranian government said they did.  However, my skepticism feels satisfied.
