User name displays
« on: December 18, 2013, 06:53:25 AM »
Something's up.  User names in some places are gibberish, and OK in others.

ETA:  Looks like the bad displays have been run through a substitution cypher.  _ = a, etc.  It's a 2-character shift to the left.

Hey, you!  "It's" with an apostrophe means "it is" or "it has."  "Its" without an apostrophe means "belongs to it."

Can you link to a thread where that is happening? I took a quick look and didn't see it, but maybe I just didn't look in the right places.
It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth.
I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth.
I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

Only seen it on my tablet so far.   I'll post screen shots tonight if possible.

Is it happening to other people's names too, or just yours?

OK, I'm on my main computer now.  Everything looks fine.  On the tablet, my name (as shown in the screen shot) and the posters' names in the threads are gibberized.  Names elsewhere look fine.  I'll post more tablet screen shots momentarily.

I only noticed it this morning.  The device is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, running Android 4.something, browsing with the default Internet app.  I'll see what Chrome does.

This is a strange issue because I can't think of any reason why the OS or browser version should affect the way the usernames are displayed.

The names are pulled from the database and displayed on the page using PHP which is server side, so the users browser and OS shouldn't make any difference.

If it was a problem with the code or database it would probably affect everyone.

Could you try clearing your browser's cache on your tablet, Nowhere Man?

I suppose that's next.  It looks fine in Chrome on the tablet.  Sorry I haven't posted any more screen shots.  It certainly seems to be that combination of browser, site, and probably font.  It's like the character set is offset by two letters.  I'll let you know.

Sounds like your font tables in the tablet have gotten corrupted. Can you find another site with the same font and size? Or maybe make up a test page?

Dunno.  At any rate, this morning all is well and the names are displayed just fine.
