NASA Lunar Orbiter: Type of camera?
« on: February 01, 2017, 08:28:49 AM »
Did the LO satellites use a slit scan camera instead of a normal global shutter camera? I think plane surveillance and other film satellites at the time used a slit camera too.

Also, is there an archive online with all the images from the LO tape rescue project?

I believe they were a standard shutter camera - this document describes the mechanisms involved:

See this page

and the bottom half of this page

for more.

The original 'McMoon's page is here http://www.moonviews.com/ and their new site is here https://loirp.arc.nasa.gov/loirp_gallery/ but there does not appear to be a complete record yet.

You can get lots of high res 133Mb versions of the LO files here http://ode.rsl.wustl.edu/moon/indexDatasets.aspx

The book "The Moon as viewed from Lunar Orbiter" is pretty easy to get hold of at a sensible price on ebay and places like Abebooks.

Hope that helps.
