My bet is Recurring Slope Lineae.  Dark slope streaks, that come and go on a seasonal basis.  Probably due to deliquescence od certain salts

I find it curious that they have announced the conference in advance.

Perhaps it is mundane as how the water on Mars was lost but still remains under certain conditions

They quite often do.

Sadly the scientists involved in the work are more wrapped up in the importance of their analyses than others, and as a result the announcements are much less exciting than they think they are.

I've just been sent an advance copy of the embargoed paper

Wait a moment. we all missed the obvious, NASA will publically announce that all the mission to Mars were faked and we know nothing more about the red planet than we did in the 70's.

Water flows on Mars periodically., creating the Linear striations.  The next big leap should be that life Has been found, why else do the striations changes color?  there indeed may be water in those cliffs, but how much?
