I like scrolling through some of the old threads, when they remind me of something I meant to search out. On that note;

New book!!

"The Moon as Viewed by Lunar Orbiter'

Has a nice section at the beginning about the equipment used too.

Which reminds me, what was it with NASA and green books? So many books from that time period seem to have green covering.

Not exactly a new book, but still something fun (goes nicely with The Moon as Viewed by Lunar Orbiter);

A photo from Lunar Orbiter 3. And, from what I can tell, they are from this Lunar Orbiter 3 frame (a little south east from the middle, there is a crater with two smaller craters above and to the right. I think I have matched this photo to those two craters);

From the description;
This photograph is an enlargement of a portion of the twelfth telephoto lens photograph taken of Sire 3P-1 by Lunar Orbiter III. When the picture is viewed with the largest and darkest crater at the upper right, North is 21 degres to the left of the top of the photograph and the Sun is shining from right at 14 ½ degrees above horizon. The picture covers a portion of the lunar surface approximately three- quarters of a mile on a side.

It was taken at 2:00 a.m. PST. on February 15, and radioed to the Goldstone California Deep Space Network station at 10:36 a.m. PST.

OMG!!!!

I was flicking through The Moon as Viewed by Lunar Orbiter last night and opened the back cover and found an envelope with a weird piece of carboard sticking out. I thought it would be funny if it was supposed to be 3D glasses and opened it............ it was!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's four anaglyphs of the lunar surface towards the back of the book I'd never noticed before and now I'm 12 years old again!

My biggest thanks to the previous owner, who kept the book, and glasses, in such good condition. I need to fix the glasses, the glue has failed after all this time.

It really is the simple things in life sometimes.

Dave McKeegan has just released a video on YT with a bunch of photo pairs from Apollo, both as side-by-sides and as red-blue anaglyphs.

I found the SBS pairs fascinating to look at, so perhaps you might like to point your peepers at the RB anaglyphs.

It seems to me that Charlie Duke has made a lot of personal appearances lately.  It is good that he does so.  I did exchange a couple of emails a few years ago, very pleasant guy and he took the time to anser my question.

I just got my copy of Apollo Outfitters, about the design and development of the Apollo space suits. Looks very impressive at first glance.

I'm nearly finished my copy. Wow - that is the most detailed record of the A7L development I have ever encountered. A great read. The sheer effort that went into the design and manufacture of those suits is way more than most understand. I'll always remember this: in the design of the suit, they ran simulated missions with astronauts and measured every bend of the arm, every bend of the legs, every bend of the torso, every twist of the shoulder, etc, as the minimum actions that the various suit parts must be able to cope with during a normal lunar mission. They then increased those numbers by 10, and that became the design minimum number of actions that a part of the suit must safely withstand.

I like books/items like 'Outfitters' because you get a lot of the details that weren't important enough for the main historical record, like have to replace/upgrade tension cables because a certain astronaut (I want to say Shepard or Mitchell but I don't recall at the moment) kept jumping and landing as hard as he could, tearing the seams.

Or the fact that in between the outer layers of Armstrong and Aldrin's EVA suits were small pieces of paper, a wish of good luck signed by the ladies who made the suits. And those slips of paper are still in Armstrong's suit...
