Ascent stage initial acceleration
« on: November 21, 2024, 06:25:11 PM »
I have been conversing with a person, who claims the initial acceleration of the A17 ascent stage was about 3 times higher than expected from the numbers for mass, thrust and gravity.

I plugged the numbers for the ascent stage in, found an acceleration of

16kN, 2445 kg spacecraft plus 2376 kg ascent fuel, plus two astronauts, and a bag of samples about 250 kg.

This gives a= f/m -> a = 16.000 N / 5071 kg -> a = 3.155 m/s^2 minus lunar gravity of 1.62 m/s^2 ->1,535 m/^2

He claims his calculations, based on the TV-transmission from the LRV, gives an initial acceleration of 3.74 m/s^2. I have pointed out what I think is a flaw in his idea, namely the ascent engine firing into the descent stage, and some pressure between the two parts would give the ascent stage a significant push for the first fraction of a second.
Well, it is like this: The truth doesn't need insults. Insults are the refuge of a darkened mind, a mind that refuses to open and see. Foul language can't outcompete knowledge. And knowledge is the result of education. Education is the result of the wish to know more, not less.

Now he even claims A16's ascent stage DEcelerated after it launched.

There was an old thread on this topic;

I'd love if he could get his account approved, I think BK would benefit from some of the people's knowledge and experience here, rather than Rasa's FB group.

That is exactly the information I was looking for. Had totally forgotten I was in that thread too.

I am here now, thank you for approving me.

I am going to start a new thread on this, so that it starts out on the right foot, without chatter about approving me, etc.  I'll present my proof/case, and the invite the waves of scrutiny.
