Telescopes, astronomy, and public groups

Hey all,

So I've had a 'new' telescope for a little over a year now (we have three in the family of various sizes). Been playing around a bit but want to get further into it, actually being able to interpret/'decode' details on how/where to point the 'scope' to see what I want. I kinda understand declination/azimuth, but it's going from that to a fixed reference frame ie a star has a specific location, regardless of where on the Earth you are, and you can convert that number into something you can work with for your local.

Did try at one point to set it up and use nothing but the numbers on the mount to point it at a target (was off by less than 1° on one reading but almost 90° on the other 'leg'), clearly in the need of advice/assistance. Probably doesn't help that I'm in the southern hemisphere, so don't have a nice, friendly star I can aim at.

Any recommendations on groups/forums? Western Sydney, Aus, if the location helps a bit more.

Stargazers Lounge or Cloudy Nights.

Also, Stellarium is a tremendous free tool too. It makes star-hopping a lot easier.
