Michael Collins 1930 - 2021
« on: April 28, 2021, 12:39:23 PM »
It appears we just lost Michael Collins.
Well, it is like this: The truth doesn't need insults. Insults are the refuge of a darkened mind, a mind that refuses to open and see. Foul language can't outcompete knowledge. And knowledge is the result of education. Education is the result of the wish to know more, not less.

Indeed. Sad news.

This came as a big surprise to me because he has been very active on social media lately. Very sad.
It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth.
I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth.
I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

His memoir was the best one.

His memoir was the best one.

I agree - witty and articulate, as the AFJ transcript suggests he was in life.

Sad to think he's gone as well.  A real inspiration, and from what I've heard a very nice person as well.  I always loved his photograph with everyone who ever lived in it... except him  :)

This came as a big surprise to me because he has been very active on social media lately. Very sad.
Indeed - I've been following him on Facebook, and he was quite active, posting lots of informative stuff from both Apollo and more recent space science.

His memoir was the best one.
For some reason I keep overlooking it, and everyone says it is a great read.  I'll be ordering a copy ASAP.

And so another soul who visited our nearest neighbour passes on into dust and memory, gone off to the great, undiscovered country.
Rest in peace, Michael Collins, and godspeed.

One more loss, not that many Moon visitors left, including the orbital guys and A13 of course.

RIP

A friend of mine does a lot of space-program-inspired paintings and sent one to Mike last year around his birthday.  He took the time to write a nice thank you letter back.  I thought that was very classy.
