Possibly the most ridiculous hoax angle ever..

Armstrong's signature on the LM plaque contains hidden messages of something or other to be decided later when it can be shoehorned in:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread1079007/pg1

Background: The person who created the thread is a pathological Nixon obsessive an historical revisionist who specialises in strawman production. My personal opinion is that he just wants another Apollo thread that he can rant on about Nixon and his other pet topic, Howard Hughes, seeing as the two in which he was active got shut down for repeated rule breaches and petty squabbling.

There are 2 Twitter banners up the side of the Above Top Secret page that say 'Deny Ignorance', but I read it initially as 'Den Of Ignorance'.

They mention the 'alien spacecraft on the rim of the crater' myth (as far as I know, Apollo 11 didn't land in a crater, am I right?) that I've heard mentioned numerous times (apparently Armstrong knew about it, and encoded it into his signature, before it actually happened). I've read transcripts of it, but one poster is claiming that there is a supposed audio recording of it. Is this true? Does anyone know who was actually responsible for it?

James Oberg has an interesting interpretation of this story:

e2a: ATS contains its share of dullards and loons, but it has a much more even handed moderation than most conspiracy hideouts, and has a fair share of sane people as a result.

Oberg's data and interpretation have a lot more validity than secret aliens and moon bases.  Upside down signature means something?  Maybe to a conspiratorial mind.  Boy the maps sure improved with the LRO images versus the ones that Apollo used in their landings.

It is quite sad that ad-hoc explanations no matter how weird, can be taken as more legitimate than what really happened.

And the conspiratorial bet goes on and on and on.

I just risked my brain having a look at that thread. I noticed several times some variety of the statement:
Quote
...a shy, reclusive, intellectual wall flower, who avoided interviews for decades...

Which is, of course, complete rubbish.

Yes, Armstrong turned down a lot of requests for appearances at various events. But his life was still so full of commitments that his first wife left him.

As for being a wallflower, I'm reminded of the story told by Milt Thompson in "At the Edge of Space" of Armstrong's time as an X-15 test pilot:
Quote
Neil was a pretty good piano player. After a few beers at a flight party, he could usually be coaxed into playing some songs. Neil also had a rather dry sense of humour. During one flight party Neil combined these two talents to confound an air force officer who requested that Neil play a song. Neil looked at the officer and noted that he was wearing a missile commander's badge. He then nonchalantly responded, "I don't know any old missileer songs," and immediately struck up a chorus of "The Wild Blue Yonder".

(TWBY = The US Air Force song)

Perhaps someone might like to copy that story over to the other thread, even if only for its insight into Armstrong's personality.

I think I may have nailed the Armstrong-Nixon connection - both men were quite good pianists even though they were famous for other things. I couldn't quickly find footage of Armstrong playing the piano (though there's footage of him doing so at his 80th birthday party), but here's a video of Nixon playing (one of his own compositions) with "15 Democratic violinists":

Perhaps someone should advise the poster on that forum...!

I see he plays the piano with the same finesse and subtlety as he does a reel to reel...

And the President at the time of the Roswell Incident could play the piano too. Who knew!?
